Did anyone read this article in this month's Portland Monthly Magazine?

http://www.portlandmonthlymag.com/this_issue/

"If you think swinging went out with the bell-bottoms and keg parties, you’re right. The buzzword for today’s lotsa-lovin’ lifestyle is “polyamory”—Latin for “My wife thinks you’re cute”—and Portlanders are getting in on the action."

If so, how was it? (I can't find a copy of the article online. If you have a link to such, please post it.)

So - anyone who'd like to meet up or have suggestions on fun sexy things to do in Portland on the 30th - let me know! We're sooooo looking forward to it!

Also - does anyone have suggestions on Sauvie Island nude beach for some afternoon relaxation?

Phoenix Moon Community Book Store

Ok everyone, here is the deal....Phoenix Moon
> Community Book store will open
> in Salem, Oregon on 09/20/08. I am currently seeking
> funds and an open
> retail space. Grants are awesome and so are
> Donations. I am seeking
> investors who are wanting to see this up off the
> ground and succeed ( AND IT
> WILL). Josh and Liv are designing the LOGO and Web
> Page. I have the whole
> sellers lined up and looking for more and I am super excited. So the
> Genre of the Phoenix Moon is
> Religion and Ethnic Tolerance: Pagan, Christian,
> Hinduism, Buddism etc all
> welcome. Will have Self help Books and a section for
> pure fiction. Selling
> Candles and Insense, Jewelry, CD's etc.. will have a
> space in the store for
> readings, class sessions. I am wanting input and
> ideas. There will be free
> Wi fi for those customers who are purchasing. It is
> going to be Awesome...
> There hasn't been this kind of Store in Salem since
> Rosebud and Fish. There
> is a giant need for this in every community and this
> community is in dire
> straights.
>
> Blessed Be
>

thanks in advance,

Some Poly folks from the East Coast are thinking about joining us in this fabulus city. They want to know about intentional communities/shared poly housing. I also need to come up with cool, fun, interesting things to highlight the best parts of Portland. My knowledge base is limited as we live in the boonies, have young kids and just don't get out much right now.

Any and all information welcome. Many thanks

Immersion

Thoughts on Immersion

im·mer·sion [i-mur-zhuhn, -shuhn]. Noun.

1. The condition of being placed underwater for a length of time.
2. A state of being deeply involved; absorbtion.

I think poly worked out for me because I went swimming in the deep end of the pool. I didn't wade in; I jumped in. I didn't test the water with the tip of a toe. I just committed. I lived with my friends for the first month of polyness. Within that space, I was able to experience the full range of popular culture crap - emotional insecurity, jealousy, guilt, anxiety, wrenching and nagging thoughts in the back of my brain about what it all means - all at once, and it worked. It filled my lungs. I sank. And to survive, I learned to swim.

Coming out of that experience I walked away with some key ideas on poly.

One - Reality. The relationship between my primary and her husband was solid. I wasn't going to disrupt it. It was all too real, tangible, and I had to deal and see it for what it was. It wasn't going to change.

Two - Selflessness. encouraging happiness between the two of them benefitted everybody, including me, and in doing so, overcame selfish tendencies to horde and hog affections.

Three - Abundance. Wow, abundance - love, feelings, affection, expressions... are abundant. Seems so obvious yet so difficult to really come to grips with.

Immersion, I think, allowed me to confront what was real, learn how to give up to get more, and how meaningless scarcity is to feelings. Anyone new to poly, I think, should do this. I don't think you can develop a strong appreciation for these things otherwise. Give in: leap, jump, splash, sink. Probably tough to do. Maybe it takes the right place, right time kinda thing. Yet, when you open your eyes and discover life below the waterline, it's like Morpheus just handed you the red pill. You give up the conventional and understandable, the habits you developed by standing on land, and you find difference in just being there, and there's nothing else you can do about it.

Still swimming these days; I haven't desired to get out of the pool. Every day is a new chance to sink a little more, to get a little deeper in my understanding of it, to explore and try new things, to see life in a totally new way. I read-up on poly, listen to poly podcasts, talk to poly people... I tell my lover that I'm sixteen, learning about relationships all over again, and redefining everything I do and feel. And I wake up every day wondering what else I can do to immerse myself and learn more. So far, it's been a fantastic voyage of self-discovery, one only made possible - I think - by letting everything go and drifting for a while to see how far I could sink, and, how long I could swim.

My husband and I are planning to attend the Erotic Ball in Portland Feb 23rd, then while he has an overnight date on Sunday, I'll be on my own from Sunday afternoon until Monday afternoon when we head back to Seattle together.

Do you have any suggestions for what's good to do on a Sunday/Monday? Other than being lazy at the hotel (I'll have a separate room) and browsing Powell's, I don't have a lot of ideas.

Portland's a nice city and I'm sure I'll find interesting things poking around on my own, but it's always more fun to have company! So....anyone want to join me? Um........The hotel has a pool and hot tub...... ;~D

Open Conversations about Open Relationships

I'm going to school fulltime this term, which makes getting to late evening meetings a bit of a problem. Usually when people whine about why things can't be scheduled for their convenience they don't get that much symphathy. This last time Darklady made a truly revolutionary suggestion (at least it got my attention). If you want something, create it for yourself.

With the idea of making my life work for me, I've set up an opportunity to join me at a discussion table for a time that I need to be on campus and have free time. I'm inviting those who are also on or near campus and have the time, to join me for an afternoon of entertaining, enlightening, and emboldening conversation on the topic of ethical, honest, and responsible non-monogamy in all its incarnations.

3:15 p.m. - 5:20 p.m.
Food for Thought Cafe
Basement of the Smith Memorial Center
located on Broadway between Montgomery and Harrison
Portland, Oregon 97207

Enter through the doors right behind the TriMet bus shelter, under the marque doorway. Go through the ticket lobby space. Take the elevator in the hallway which runs parallet to the ground floor cafeteria (not the one near the Info counter). Go to B for basement, the cafe is a right out of the elevators, on the left side of the hallway.

I'll try to reserve the larger round table in the far corner. I will try to bring some small poly symbol to identify the group if I remember, usually a book, otherwise you'll need to use your sleuthing powers to recognize me from my profile photo.

Poly experienced, poly newbie or just poly-curious are all welcome to join in the discussion. Food is vegetarian/vegan for those who come with empty tummies. They do a pretty spectacular job of keeping me fed during the term. Stumptown coffee is only a buck!

Past conversational topics
Jan 10 - Different ways of doing and labeling our relationships, advantages to dating those who have experience negotiating boundaries
Jan 17 - CANCELLED: SNOW DAY
Jan 24 - NRE, expectations in relationships, co-housing and polyamory, "Getting Real" game cards

distracting toys, both naughty and nice on display, would require you
to keep a tight rein on your young ones. Spacious location for adult
conversations however.

Celebrate Domestic Partnerships in Oregon!

I wanted to let all you poly folk know that the Domestic Partnership Law is set to be implemented beginning January 2nd.

Anyone who would like to participate by supporting those who wish to register their partnership status is invited to help out as announced by BRO (Basic Rights Oregon):

We'll be on site at the Multnomah County Building helping Oregon families gain the recognition they deserve - and we need your help! Join us on January 2nd, 3rd and 4th in Multnomah County to help families register as domestic partners! As the state's population center, we'll need all the help we can get in Multnomah County.
Here are all the details:
Help Oregon families at the Multnomah County Building
Date: January 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 2008
Times: 7:30 am - 12:30 pm, 12:00 - 5:30 pm
Location: 501 SE Hawthorne (Portland)
Contact: Aubrey at Aubrey@basicrights.org or at 503-222-6151 x109

One thing that is pending is an 11th hour effort by activists against equal rights as announced by BRO:

"Basic Rights Oregon has learned that out of state attorneys are currently working with anti-equality activist David Crowe to sue Oregon's Secretary of State over their failed petition drive. These organizations - led by the "Alliance Defense Fund" - have filed a motion seeking to block the implementation of Oregon's domestic partnership law on January 1, 2008."

http://www.concernedoregonians.com/pdfs/lemonscomplaint.pdf

This will be brought before the courts on December 28th.

It is my hope that the courts will rule in favor of the law which has already been passed and will support the registration of domestic partnerships. Either way, we will be at the courthouse on January 2nd either to celebrate equality or to protest discrimination.

Please "Come Out" to support Equal Rights!

Kind of Like Unofficial Polygamy

I found this annoying:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/dear_margo/20071101/en_dm/margo_howard20071101;_ylt=A0WTUcSBJSpH2lgAsg7AGL8C

There were several things to be annoyed about, but for me, this was the most annoying part:

"I am not sure why you felt the need to breeze it around that you and your husband have "wonderful girlfriends.""

She didn't "breeze it around," she told her "well-intentioned friends and family."

Apparently, this woman is of the opinion that polyamorous folks should just live in secret shame, not even telling their family and close friends of their close and loving multiple relationships. I wonder if she has the same attitude about gays and lesbians.

"I am not sure why you felt the need to tell your friends and family that you're gay."

I don't understand why anyone would ask Ann Landers' daughter for advice on alternative sexuality anyway. That's like asking Martha Stewart for advice on making homemade butt plugs.

Sadly, only about a dozen people were at last night's opening of the CineKink Film Festival at the Clinton Street Theater. The feature films were both documentaries, plus some amusing shorts. and an opening trailer called "Sissies Gone Wild" that was a real hoot. Both "Vice and Consent" and "Webcam Girls" were well done and thoughtful presentations of their subject matter. The first one featured Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy, authors of the Ethical Slut, as well as other kinky folks. The second one featured two very different "performance artists" of the internet, both totally fascinating personalities.

Wish you had been there ;-(

Hi all-- My primary partner (Deborah) and I have just moved to Eugene, from Maryland. We're both active and experienced poly, so we're looking for local poly groups and friends. It appears from Loving More's links that this Portland group may be the closest to us -- but are any of you folks down around Eugene/Springfield, and/or do you know of any groups in this area? Portland is close enough that we could get up there for occasional events -- but naturally we'd also like to find friends closer to home as well. --Pete Benson (& Deborah Carney-MacFarlane)

members of the Polyamorypdx group and I/we'd love to have a lot of
people show up!!
(For those that went last year, we plan to have the picnic in the
same place.)

Poly Picnic and group birthday celebration

Let's celebrate the birthday of the polyamoryPDX group with a potluck
picnic at Laurelhurst Park on Sunday, September 16th!!

We can meet at the picnic table/benches West of the pond and North of
Oak Street at 1pm.
(Anyone wanting to look it up via the net the address is 3601 SE Oak,
Portland, OR)

Please bring food to share and bring your own drinks…any extra
napkins, plates, plastic ware, etc would also be welcome…just in case
they're needed.

We had a picnic in the same area last year and there were about 30
people who showed up over the course of a couple hours. Everyone had
a good time and it was definitely a family friendly event.

I will have some balloons to mark the area.
If you have folding chairs or blankets to sit on it might be a good
idea to bring them since people tend to out number available seats.
Everyone-no matter what acronym you may consider yourself to be-is
welcome!!

Hope to see many people there!

Hugs,
Michelle n Mike

My bf (Avacha on here) and I will be in Portland visiting for Labor Day weekend. We're considering Portland as a long-term home and would like to meet poly people in the area. Does anyone know of any events happening that weekend? Thanks! :-)

Anyone here been to that group, by chance?

A Modern Polyamorist

with apologies to Bill and Artie, who don't deserve this sort of thing:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I am the very model of a modern polyamorist
I've information philosophic, sophomoric and solipsist.
I know the types of families, I quote the types historical
From polygamy to polyfi, in order categorical.
I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters biological,
I comprehend the reasons for safe sex, it's only logical.
About jealousy and envy, I'm teeming with a lot o' news,
With many cheerful facts on how to do things with more than twos.

I'm very good at listening and confidential communiques
Discretion is my middle name, in several or a lot of ways.
In short, in matters philosophic; sophomoric or solipsist,
I am the very model of a modern polyamorist.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I thought I remembered something like this floating around lists from some time back, but could not find it. So I sat down with a rhyming dictionary and cobbled this together. It's rough and unfinished, so if anyone has suggestions about how to improve this, or finish it (the original is over twice as long), I'd be happy to take them into consideration. Next week, it's Dr. Seuss!

Looking for Couples Therapist

My wife and I are having trouble finding a poly-friendly couples therapist in Portland. I'd very much appreciate any recommendations. Our troubles do not center on poly issues, so we won't be discussing polyamory exclusively, or even necessarily much at all. But we do certainly need a therapist who can deal with the concept and not dismiss it out of hand as an automatic marriage buster. It's almost like we need a poly-friendly therapist so that the therapist herself doesn't focus on it so much!

Anyhow, any recommendations appreciated. We'll travel to outlying areas if need be, but we live in SE Portland.

Thanks!

Original Hotcake House

Hello,

I have a steady day job, we just need a cheaper place, looking for something around $400-500ish total with utilities. We're very friendly! We play games, go biking, farmer's market, library, eat pretty healthy, and are just all around nice folks.

A shared house would be best, I think sharing an apt would be cramped, but you never know... We'd like to be in Beaverton or very nearby; the closer to the Beaverton Library/Farmers Market, the better.

Thank you!

Hello all! I have been in the group about a month now and feel like an intro is in order. I am new to the area, been here almost two months. I relocated due to a job. I am 45, bi and single and would love to meet some people in the poly community. I have been to a cpl get togethers and met some real cool folks. I live in Hillsboro with a housemate and my 10 year old dog. I work weekends so it makes it hard to attend the poly pancakes event or anything else going on on the weekends.
I am very new to poly having just two relationships w couples, both not a live-in situation and both included relatively long distances...2 hrs. Both good situations except for the distance. Anyway, hoping to meet some new folks! Donna

...with me *gestures to the outer me that people see*. I have set out on a journey to become who I feel I am. I was raised in a very strict home and was told by my parents who I am and it has taken a long time-- too long-- for me to start seperating myself from this. It is hard for me, but I am slowly beginning to learn how to open up to people--sometimes people who could potentially reject me. Whether it be telling people that I am bi, explaining poly, or just wearing eyeliner in public are all biiiig issues for me. I'm sure that there are others here who relate. What kind of experience do you have that could help me or others--in relation to poly, of course, since this is a poly forum?

Monday Chill Out - April 2

Here Kitty has skipped town for the weekend. She usually forwards on my posts. Finally got techy enough to do it myself:

We had a great turn out last month for our first Chill Out in Beaverton. Hope lots of you can make it this month too. One of our Chill Out regulars, Todd, has very kindly put together bus and Max directions to make it easy for all of us to get out to the 'burbs if you are not from anywhere near Beaverton. He's used 5th and Jefferson as the starting point and you can adjust from there. Thanks Todd!

1st Monday of the month - Beaverton Chill:

Where: Java Nation coffee shop, 4130 SW 117th
across the street from the shopping center with the Fred Meyer just off
Canyon Road/8

When:
6:30 p.m. to 9ish

Why: Because you're poly, poly curious, poly friendly or just plain
friendly.

What: a place to hang out, chill out, have a bite, start a conversation or
join one already in progress.

Bus #58 gets you very close to Java Nation:
From SW 5th Ave & SW Jefferson St (Stop ID 12791)
Board 58 Canyon Road to Beaverton TC
Get off at SW Canyon & Red Robin
Walk 0.1 mile northeast to 4130 SW 117th Ave
Travel time: 24 minutes (including 3 minutes walking)

or

MAX (or ANY bus that gets you to Beaverton Transit Center) gets you
less than a half-mile walk away:
Walk 0.29 mile north from SW 5th Ave & SW Jefferson St to Mall/SW 5th
Ave MAX Station (Stop ID 8382)
Board MAX Red Line to City Center & Beaverton TC
Get off at Beaverton TC MAX Station
Walk 0.4 mile southeast to 4130 SW 117th Ave (quickest route is to
take the pedestrian bridge over the creek on the east end of the
transit mall and cut through the shopping malls to get to Java nation)
Travel time: 45 minutes (including 23 minutes walking)

Just wondering... I got my whitened-since-my-20's hair colored today, a vanity fer sure... yet I reflect on how where'bouts despaired/physically attracted to someone includes the need to love and be loved - also, how it can be a soul/spiritual or emotional need as well as a physical need, and issues @ too aged or too young might be? Youth is so sure and invincible... I'm into my fifties and really don't wander prowling amidst the nubile, under thirty crowd. Well, maybe a little... as I do love to dance, beseemed attractive, and really adjoin/relate to my original "glory-years," yet also discriminate @ different stages of life... 'cause I subtly recognize permutations of real beauty. You will all deal with this positive/negative knot... so do give me some leeway here... Practicalities are important, and so is what individually moves us and/or squicks. I discovered a wonderful LBG hairstylist today in my neighborhood (shameless plug for 'Open and Out' on King Rd. in Milwaukie) who said that I, have this Sean Connery sound/look thing going for me, which aint too bad to hear... but my cat doesn't care about that sort of stuff... all that can hide how appearances deceive, how collective presentations of youth underlies characterizations that belie what is always in tension and present, but also how I really appreciate those who are of an age... Youth nourishes my phantasies... yet need so much nourishment... The tone of my feelings is that the young also sees their lives often to one-sidedly, even self-destructively, but also how many "of an age" haven't freed themselves from false lives...

Raven Kaldera's "Pagan Polyamory" - has anyone else read it?

I finished this book over the weekend and am so thoroughly impressed with it. I'm not pagan (not unless one of those online quizes counts, where I rate highest on NeoPagan among other belief systems). I'd love to hear from those who are pagan and polyamorous, especially if you've read this book. There's real practical advice in here, along with the pagan rituals. Most of it would apply to anyone, no belief system synchronicity required.

I got my brand-spanking-new copy for $1.98 on eBay and it far exceeded my expectation. The cover price is $16.95 so if you hurry, there may still be copies. I think Amazon.com also has the same book seller, as well as used copies. Don't know if the library system carries it, they should.

Included in the Appendix was the orginal essay in which Morning Glory Zell-Ravenheart first coined the term polyamory. "A Bouquet of Lovers: Strategies for Responsible Open Relationships" Written in 1990, it's just as if she wrote it yesterday. Highly recommended reading, especially if you got to polyamory through another form of non-monogamy.

I'll have my copy at the Wednesday "Open Conversations about Open Relationships" discussion table. For a preview look, feel free to stop by this afternoon, any time between 3 and 5:30 pm.

Jerome here, new to this social network, but lurked a bit. Just saying hello, and do peruse my profile when and if... I'll be contributing ahead as seems the spirit moves, Do appreciate how Poly love is lived and expressed herebout's. I live in Milwaukie, fairly new to area after living here many long strange trips ago... Used to be a childbirth educator/labor coach for pregnant teens in N.W. Portland once upon a time in a universe far, far away. Been a psych counselor and a whole mishmash of stuff I really cant do justice to on my profile, and these days do crafts/art and am involved in Depth Psychology community. Poly single these days... not going to overtly advertise here, but hope you get to know me and I've really enjoyed wandering through many posts and profiles to sorta come up to speed here.

Locally, wrote a little blurby thing on Portland/Gresham Poly meet-up recently that may/may not give some flavor @ me, I'm "Aery" there, Hi Kat! Hungry for intersocial interaction, friends, shared activities... just open... I'm making a new foray into Poly again after @ a 5 year hiatus for a too complicated story/journey, but this "tribe" is home for me... Some might remember me from Poly.org contributions over the years...

Really, just look foreward to mixing and perhaps connecting all round. I've an open door.

Fortune,
Jerome

Today is International Women's Day. It is a celebration of the political, economic and social achievements of women around the world. This day is used to express love and gratitude to the women around them. It is similar to St Valentine's Day but with a deep theme of highlighting the struggles of women worldwide. In connecting to the vital soul of this, for so many elements @ the deep feminine element, I send my reflective personal blessings to each unique being, including their relationships... hugs if you need them... and many real appreciations/recognitions...

Come on out for some fun at Sufi Safari!

SUFI SAFARI
an eclectic evening of rocking absurdity

Saturday, March 10, 2007
Outlaws (722 E. Burnside)--the old Bossanova Ballroom!
$10 at the door
9pm – 3am

Wild kingdom, whirling dervish, or jungle attire encouraged!

featuring:

STYNX : A one-night-only all-star band plays The Who, Zeppelin, Supertramp, Radiohead, and more, but no Styx! Featuring members of The Eels, Solovox, MarchFourth, Titans of Oblivion, Trash Can Joe, and the Nowhere Band!

TELEPHONE: Recently signed by Cobra Music. Eric Hedfords’s new-wave synth-rock supergroup. First appearance in over a year, with all-new lineup and material! Catch them before they showcase at SXSW.

SOLOVOX: Portland's premier one-man electronic band debuts all new dance material designed to shake your rump!

CIRCUS BEBOP: Jazzy acrobatic performance hipsters from Montreal, featuring former members of Cirque du Soleil. First and only Portland appearance!

EMILY POST All-woman vocal powerhouse featuring members of Dahoo Chorus and LiveWire!

ABOUT STYNX, WI-FLI, AND THE NATURE OF “SUFI SAFARI”:
Known primarily as the bassist & bandleader for MarchFourth, John Averill was also the co-creator & musical mastermind behind Kaosmosis from 2003-2006. Since 2000, his work in the Portland underground event scene as both a singer and producer, in some circles, is legendary (Dahoo Chorus, Roswell Sisters, Manaconda, Nowhere Band, Yeti Snowball, Chow Yun Fat Tuesday, Chopper Won, Flying Dream, Woonami Village... to name just a few entities).

Now, in 2007, Averill returns with Wi-Fli Events to create a show called SUFI SAFARI, and plans on “reclaiming” the space now called "Outlaws" (formerly Bossanova) for one night of fun in the wild kingdom of music and performance. One of John’s trademarks, aside from singing difficult lead vocals (Queen, Jeff Buckley, Beatles, etc) is creating fictitious “one-off” bands. On March 10, his latest creation, called STYNX, will appear for one night, featuring Chet Lyster (Eels, Fernando) on guitar, Carl Tietze (Solovox) on keyboards, and the rock-solid rhythm section of drummer Ryan Moore (Titans of Oblivion) and bassist Arthur Parker (TJoe, Rachel Taylor Brown).

‘BUT DON’T WORRY, STYNX will NOT be playing ANYTHING by the band Styx” Averill explains. “The name was too silly to resist, but we just couldn’t bring ourselves to play anything by Styx, not because it was too obvious, but because we couldn’t find a song of theirs that didn’t suck.” Instead, STYNX will focus on rarely-performed covers of Zeppelin, Supertramp, Radiohead, and other surprises.

MORE ABOUT WI-FLI EVENTS: Wi-Fli could mean "Wonderful Inspiration - Freedom Loves Imagination," but what it really means is "When I Feel Like It," or perhaps "Wear Insanely Fun Lingerie Indefinitely." Wi-Fli will only produce a couple of events a year. We are not a company. We do not have a website. We will not bother you with random emails announcing eventual or hypothetical happenings. We will only contact you when the time is right and worthy of your attention. If you would like to be removed or added to our mailing list, please contact wifli.events@gmail.com. Wi-Fli? Wi not?

Mt. St. Helens in July?

Ok, it’s time to take up the challenge and get some things going for this group for the coming summer. I would like to propose a hike up to the rim of Mt. St. Helens this coming July.

To do this we (the group) needs to start planning day hikes each month to get in shape for a 7-12 hour hike. I also thought we could camp near St. Helens so we could get an early start. So if anyone who was not interested in the hike is still interested in joining in, they could just hang out at camp while the hikers are on the trail.

We need to plan this real soon since we will need a hiking permit to go up to the rim. There are only 100 permits issued each day with the maximum of 12 per group (this doesn’t mean we can’t get 2 permits if we have a larger group). The cost is $15 per permit (plus $7 online handling fee) for a total of $22. So the sooner we get this going the sooner we can make sure that we have a permit(s) for the hike.

So, if you’re really interested in going on the Mt. St. Helens hike or any of the day hikes or even the campout, come to the March 12 coffee munchie at Sound Grounds and we can discuss it and see if there is enough interest in doing the hike and start planning for all the fun.

Well, another couple of weeks blow on by. My wife suggested that she wanted to have an open marriage. I've posted this before, but I just wanted to add a few things.

She had someone specific in mind. I understand that. I agreed to let her have fun outside the marriage, this took quite a bit of effort from me. I'm usually very attatched to one person. She told me that she wanted me to date someone else as well. This is a bit of an odd request. I haven't so much as looked at another person in eight years. I'm very much out of practice, when it comes to dating. So, I asked out a wonderful young woman that I'd been friends with for a long time. We went on a couple of dates, and I felt wonderful with her. She made me feel important. She made me feel romantic.

but alas, she decided to reconcile with a previous person, placing me back on a good friend basis. I'll always have feelings for her.

In the meantime, the guy that my wife wanted dissappeared. His interest seemed to dry up. My wife turned to the internet, and wow, what a response she received. She was going out on dates four or more times a week. This left me home with a toddler most nights alone. She comes home, and just talks about her dates, her experiences and such, making me feel even more alone.

So here's my problem. I don't know where to meet people, especially people that understand polyamorous relationships. I tried placing an advertisment on our local Craigslist, and that netted one response in seven days.

I'm tired of being married and lonely

I've been poly for quite a long time. I started off horribly, but learned over time what poly actually means(to me) and have incorporated it into my life. 10 years later I find the woman of my dreams and commit my life to her. She is of the monogomous sort, and feels awkward talking about making our relationship poly. Now, I don't NEED a third in our life. I only want her to be comfortable with the fact that I can care about her, love her, and still share my heart with another in a way that doesn't diminish the relationship with either. Have any of you stumbled into this situation before, and how did you solve it?

I just found this great article on the del.icio.us site and wondering if anyone else was finding it a useful source of material on poly?

http://www.tikkun.org/magazine/tik0701/frontpage/monogamy

I'll cross-post it on the thread on Open Conversations.. as a possible discussion topic for next week's meeting. Some of us are voracious readers, others not so. I just want to explore the roots of jealousy without hearing all the old trite explanations, many of which arose with the Myth of Monogamy. If you can't make it to PSU next Wednesday, and you got something out of the article, or have a unique perspective on jealousy, please post here. We'll discuss your thoughts without you...LOL

Poly at PSU - Come share 'elegant discourse' with me.

In the spirit of creating something that works for me, I'm announcing a Wednesday afternoon PSU poly discussion table. I have a meeting at noon that requires me to be on campus before my evening class. i would love to see any and all peoples, associated with PSU or not, join me for coffee or tea at the Food for Thought Cafe in the basement of the Smith Memorial Center on Broadway and Harrison.

Until I know what works for people, I'll arrange to be there from 4-6 pm beginning this Wednesday. I'm looking for good conversation on any aspect of polyamory, both practical and abstract. I'm in a five year (almost) FMF "V" relationship but have been philosophically poly since 1969. I've also been in three different MFM "V"s in the past so have seen the other side of the coin as well. I'm inordinately fond of probing questions and exceptionally willing to answer same (within legitimate bounds, of course).

Same rules apply as the Monday coffee events: Poly experienced, poly newbie or poly-curious are welcome to join me. Food is vegetarian/vegan for those who come with empty tummies. They do a pretty spectacular job of keeping me fed during the term.

Barbara

Use the Tribe photo to find me, I'll holding down a table or parked on one of their comfy couches. I'm on campus to attend class so won't be bringing a parrot with me (sorry for this, all you fetish lovers).

I've just learned that a great woman I've been dating for about
6 weeks has decided that in fact her monogamous leanings
mean it is not right for her to continue to date me, despite
our mutual affection, attraction, chemistry & sweet energy.

I know, know know that I should try harder to date women that are
already on board with non-monogamy, but right now I just want to
express my disappointment, and a bit of fear that a jillion great
gals out there won't want to relate intimately with me because I
won't be their one and only....

If not, would anybody be interested in attending and/or hosting? I don't have a place to host, but always happy to contribute. Plus I'll assist with set-up or clean-up. :-)

I realize that during the holidays may not be the best time for everybody, but maybe in January sometime after things cool down again?

Hi, my name is Laura. I have been polyamorous for a little under a year and have lived in portland four years. I have been looking around pdx-poly for awhile now, but am a bit shy and haven't posted or gone to the poly monday. I would like to meet people but have some social anxiety. Of course I post now that I need a favor!

So I'm a student at Lewis & Clark College and part of the planning committee for the Gender Studies Symposium we do every year. This year the theme is "Our Voices, Ourselves" (you can look at the speakers for this year and past years http://www.lclark.edu/dept/gender/symposia.html). So I have proposed a roundtable discussion on polyamory. I would like to educate the community on polyamory...but not in a strictly informative way, but personal, straight from experience way. Some of these questions I have developed are (always open to suggestions):

Why are you polyamorous/How did you become polyamorous?
Do you think you were “born” polyamorous?
What is your poly-family’s configuration?
How do you view the hierarchy within your relationships?
Do you experience compersion? Can you discuss an example of this?
What is jealousy? How do you deal with jealousy?
How do you feel about monogamy?
Does your legal status as a polyamorist concern you?
Do you think polyamory is the next fight in family law?
Can you share one “poly mistake” you have made with us?
What is the importance of communication within your relationship?
How has polyamory changed you, as a person?

So I would like your suggestions and perhaps find some people interested in being part of this discussion? The symposium is Wednesday, March 7 - Friday, March 9, 2007, I am not sure when the session will be. But based on availability I can ask for a certain time.

Thank you so much!

I was delighted to learn the word "poing" this week, which has been used on alt.polyamory for years (I'm told) and which means basically what the more clinical-sounding "compersion" does -- happiness for someone else's happiness. Such a jolly word.

Even better, I got to experience poing for some friends this week, and it made it that much more fun to be able to say: I'm poinging you right this minute. (And yeah, you know who you are. Heehee!)
I am a recent transplant to the Oregon area (Ashland), from Montana. Long time Polyamourist, but only recently found a word for it.
I have a wonderful truly poly relationship, which incorporates spirituality, and growth to our loving life and adventures.
I am hoping for conversations, with like minded folks, a poly support group, if you will, so please do not hesistate to mssge me anytime. More than happy to answer questions, and share dialogue.
Oh, and BTW check out Cunningminx's Polyweekly podcast....it's like a radio for polys!

Is there a facility/clinic in Portland you would recommend? Please help me build a support community for this topic by spreading the word!

Introductions...

Howdy, all:

So, this is my introduction to the group. My birth name is Matthew, but my chosen name is Indigo. I'm a 32-year old divorced father of one. My ex and I had an open, somewhat poly relationship for the better part of 11 years. After having my first taste of what an open relationship can be like, I know (in the way that you might know your favorite color, or know how to eat, or breathe) that polyamorous is what I am. Our divorce was finalized in December, and I have been feeling lately that I'm ready to start dating again -- whee! I just discovered this tribe (I'm fairly new to tribes as well), and so, here I am! I'm not saying I'm here to find potential partners, just to meet like-minded people, and to be a bit social. Especially since it looks like y'all get together not two blocks from my house at least once a week!

In my spare time, I draw comics and am working on a set of tarot cards. You can see samples of both at my blog, www.lunarbistro.com. I also organize the annual Stumptown Comics Fest, and my most recent impossible crush is the curly-haired, doe-eyed bombshell who works at the Reynolds Optical on hawthorne. Yow!

So, yeah. That's me! Howdy!

OK so we all have walked through Home Depot and found sex toys. We call them pervertables. Clamps, eye bolts, chain, dowel rods, nylon strapping materials. Pervertables. Something to convert from vanilla usage to sexual usage.

Now what if walking through a sex shop you find a devise just right for your shop project of making a vibrating machine to get the air out of cake batter for use in the kitchen. What do you call it? Reversing technology?

Hello all you great people!

I'm new to this tribe, though not to the poly lifestyle. I'm interested in meeting other poly folks that ride motorcycles or are interested in getting into riding them. I don't care what you ride or your riding style, experience levels, etc. Martian or Venutian, it matters not.

If you're interested you can either message me direct or check out my tribe, Moto Ducks, at:
http://tribes.tribe.net/motoducks

Have a wonderful weekend!

Ok, I posted this in Livejournal, but I think it's relevant here too...

Why is it that when you put up an ad (the internet, a newspaper, the bathroom stall, etc...) looking for a secondary or other significant partner, and you specify that, although you are indeed bisexual, you are looking for a woman, the men still come out of the woodwork?

It seems so....counterproductive.

I mean, does it ever work?

I'm just kinda curious here, because I, personally, would not respond to ad that said the poster only wanted men.

Okay, I've talked my sister into coming to visit me. It's been about 8 years since I've seen her. She's flying in from Texas for a weekend, in early October. She's flying Friday afternoon and Monday day. I have two days to catch up with her, introduce her to my younger son and show her what we can of the best parts of Portland area.

She wants to see some of the coast, she wants to do some geocaching. I think the Saturday Market and Powell's would be good, too.

So, what would be on the top of *your* list of Must See Portland?

Monthly poly dinners

We are bringing back the tradition of monthly dinners.
These used to be scheduled when out of town polys were visiting.

The 27 JAN 2005 7PM at Sivalaya Thai Restaurant worked well. Eight people showed up and about half the group headed off for drinks afterwards.

It looks like SE area works well.

The monthly Lucky Lab Poly Meet up and Last Sunday's Coffee munch were a disaster last month since only two of us showed up.

Where should we meet ?

Thursday at 7PM seemed to work.

We might want to try Casa De Rios a Mexican place on SE Hawthorne with a very cozy bar.

An introduction

A friend I've been flirting with in SF for a while spends a lot of time on tribe and recommended posting on the polyamory site <here>. So, I am putting my toes in the water with a short introduction.

I'm in an amazing cafe. I feel like I'm in Paris. the view is that good. Wish I had a camera and could post the view, but I'm in one room, small tables, a couple stuffed chairs, a couch, throught the archway into the bigger room, many tables, diffused sunlight, and furthest away the lunch counter, and behind that colorful sign chalkboard showing the coffee choices and behind that drifting back and forth bakers and cooks who make everything from scratch, light music in the background, child playing with an etchasketch...

and, yeah, I was trying to introduce myself. Gosh, that seems to change from moment to moment these days. I'm in luxurious heaven at the moment, taking some days weeks months from my work as a software tester, playing with the idea of not returning to that type of work, learning about peak states of consciousness, partying a bit, enjoying the season.

just planted bulbs at the cafe - out front, daffodils and tulips, which says a lot about me, I like being part of places, part of this City. I'm leading my n'hood tree planting in February.

And, then, there's doing bikram yoga, slimming down a little, having lots of free time and feeling at 44, sexier and smarter and more interesting than I've ever been. And, out of my last monogamous relationship 7 months ago, and that's feeling well-healed.

and, sexually, I'm a boy. mosty attracted to women, but do feel comfortable with men, as well. Did the Body Electric workshop for men, which included masturbating one another, sacred sexuality - was quite eye-opening. I'm also into breathwork, and really all sorts of ways to get to the other side - ecstatic states (and staying in them...). Spanking seems like a good entry-point as well, surely it's a turn on, both giving and receiving. I picked that up at burning man which is a big part of my life. I've been 6 years and this will be my 7th. I'm a part of a big theme camp which provides postal services on the playa and lately I've noticed that the friends I've made over the years on the playa are starting to be more and more a part of my life off the playa. In fact, I have one hell of a network both locally and globally. And, my community here, which is a bit of a different fish, is very supportive and warm and mmmm, I love them!

And part of me wonders whether I'm ready to share and be shared. As I touch the waters of poly, I can see that they look somewhat clear but get murky quickly, but I'm looking forward to seeing what they look like when I'm in them.

OK, all for now. But feels like a good start.

When I just looked at my LoveTribe.org page I realized I would love to start with a girlfriend. And, perhaps someone who is not attached, so that we can start together and then perhaps branch out. So, I think that's who I'm looking for - Ms. Right.

Just wanted to drop a quick hello to all in the group. I've belonged to the tribe for a little while, but have been to bust to post an introduction. I hope to get to know some of you on here and I would like to say that it's nice to have a place where I can talk to other like minded people and not worry about getting flamed, harrassed, etc. So, once again, just thought that I would say "Hi".

The latest event mentioned as a meet-up opportunity was this from Rick:

Ok...Come to my band's show tonight at Duffs Garage (corner of SE 7th and Market). We play piano driven New Orleansish music and rockabilly. Got a name all you polys should love...The Pleasure Seekers. Show is 12/29 at 9:00ish and the cover is a mere $3.00.

FREE Blues show in Portland this Wednesday - anybody up for it?

Howdy, all. Just seein' if there are any Blues-friendly Polys out here. I'm going to a FREE blues show by Hillstomp this Wednesday. Would be happy if any of you could join me so I don't have to sit all by m'self. *sniff* (Of course, that might be *better* for Blues...)

Anybody interested in meeting there, grabbing a beer/mineral water, and listenin' to some music? It even gets over early (8pm) for us old, have-to-get-up-for-work folks. :-)

I heard these guys on XM today, and they really have somethin' goin' on -- deep, deep groove with some refreshingly sharp punky elements. Then I found out they were from Portland, and I had to see if I could catch them live.

Here's the band:
http://www.hillstomp.com/

Here's the venue:
http://mysite.verizon.net/res8u18i/laurelthirstpublichouse/id4.html

Here's the show:
Wednesday December 14th
Laurelthirst Public House, 2958 N.E. Glisan Portland
6-8 pm
FREE

"Dear Amy" advice column freaks on poly

(Cross-posting to at least one other tribe)

Syndicated advice columnist Amy Dickinson, an up-and-coming "Dear Abby" type, ran this letter today from a fretting mom asking how to handle her married, bi, poly daughter wanting to include a girlfriend in the family's Thanksgiving celebration. "Dear Amy's" response seems so simplistic and stupid, avoiding any possibility of love or companionship or even family, that it really ticked me off.

Anybody else? Or am I overreacting? Is Thanksgiving a Republicans-only deal, only they never sent me the memo?

----------

Dear Amy: I have always considered myself open to diversity and open to people in general.

I have a good, strong relationship with my daughter. But she has thrown one at me that I am having trouble negotiating.

Two years ago she married a man whom I adore for accepting her and loving her the way she is, and for adopting her two children who were fatherless. The children are both doing much better with him in their lives, and so is she.

Last May, however, she and her husband announced to me that they were both gay. They were planning to remain in the marriage, and each of them would be free to have a significant other on the side.

Her husband already had someone. Not only did they want me to accept this, but to celebrate it.

I told them I could do the first, but not the second.

Now the holidays are arriving. My daughter asked if she could include her new girlfriend at Thanksgiving, because, she said, she's proud of me and wants her girlfriend to know me. She knows that in the past I have always been open to including others at the Thanksgiving table.

I told her I like Amanda just fine (I've met her), but that I didn't feel right including this big, happy extended "family" at the table as if everything were OK, partly because I feel that the whole thing has not played out and that it is endangering her marriage.

Any words of wisdom for me?

- Stymied in Portland, Ore.

Dear Stymied: Your openness and liberal attitude about diversity are beautiful.

Now your daughter is whacking you over the head with it.

Don't let her.

This isn't a gay thing. This is a question of your daughter stepping way over the line.

Let's pretend that your daughter and her husband are both straight and that she wants to bring both her husband and her male lover to Thanksgiving dinner. Would you even consider including this threesome at your Thanksgiving table?

I've been Ploy well most of my life,My parents we're self discribed swingers. although I'd definately clasify them as polyamerous now. they tended to form bonds with the couples they shared encounters with. one particular couple was like my second set of parents for a large part of my life. so I had it ingrained early that it was O.k. to be attracted to more than one partner, even that it was O.K. to Fall in Love with more than one person at a time.
what about you what is your experence? Just trying to get a tread goin here;)

Polyamory to English translator

This was forwarded by a friend who asserts that they found it on a blog.

Read at your own risk! <G>

Guy
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Poly phrase: "I don't use primary/secondary terminology, since I don't see my relationships as hierarchical."

English translation: "You're a secondary."

Poly phrase: "For me sex is about energy, so breathing and heart connection are more important than ejaculation."

English translation: "I'm more sophisticated than the guy over there, please sleep with me instead."

Poly phrase: "I see polyamory as being more about relationships and
intimacy, while swinging is just about sex, and sex without intimacy is just not where I'm at right now."

English translation: "I'm more sophisticated than the guy over there, please sleep with me instead."

Poly phrase: "The most important thing to me is keeping agreements."

English translation: "If you start seeing someone else and I'd feel
unsophisticated just saying that I'm jealous, then I'll reinterpret one of
our agreements until I'm able to say you broke it."

Poly phrase: "Even secondary relationships for me aren't just about sex."

English translation: "Secondary relationships for me are just about sex."

Poly phrase: "Right now the most important things to me are building poly family and intentional community."

English translation: "I'm getting concerned that I won't always be able to easily find new partners, plus I'm tired of driving from place to place, and oh yeah, I'm more sophisticated than the guy over there, so please sleep with me instead."

Poly phrase: "In our household the most important things are open
communication and open process."

English translation: "Expect to be abused with passive-aggressive 'I'
statements."

Poly phrase: "I don't feel that we communicate on the same level, and that you aren't supporting me emotionally."

English translation: "I'm tired of you but it would make me seem less
sophisticated and hence reduce my opportunities for further sexual
relationships in this community to actually say that so
bluntly, so I'll make this about vague failings on your part instead."

Poly phrase: "I think we should each have veto power."

English translation: "I want to reserve the right to veto each of your
partners, no matter how much they respect our existing relationships, so
that you're de facto limited to monogamy while I play the field."

Poly phrase: "I think that we should focus on each other for a while."

English translation: "I'm having more trouble finding partners than you are, time to clip your wings!"

Poly phrase: "I want you to always feel OK telling me what's really going on in your life, and asking for what you need in this relationship."

English translation: "Ask for what you need, and express hurt feelings, at
your peril."

Poly phrase: "I'm not angry at you, I'm angry at myself, for not having
recognized sooner that we weren't right for each other."

English translation: "I'm angry at you for not making my life perfect, but
rather than taking responsibility for setting and meeting my own goals I
find it more satisfying to shift the blame to you while superficially
appearing to do the opposite."

Poly phrase: "Out of respect for our primary bond, we normally only see
other people together."

English translation: "MAYBE THIS TIME I'LL FINALLY GET TO HAVE SEX WITH TWO WOMEN AT ONCE OMG OMG OMG THAT WOULD BE L33T!!!!! "

Poly phrase: "I think we need to process the end of our relationship and get closure."

English translation: "I'd like to kick you while you're down."

Poly phrase: "We obviously need to work on our relationship."

English translation: "We're through, I just want to vent a little more so
that I can feel a little more self-righteous once you know it's over too,
OK?"

Poly phrase: "The idea of line marriage has always appealed to me."

English translation: "The idea of having sex with people younger than me has always appealed to me."

Poly phrase: "So, which conventions do you like to attend, what kind of
books do you like to read, what are your spiritual beliefs, and what is your ideal occupation?"

English translation: "Which science fiction conventions do you like to
attend, who is your favorite fantasy author, what form of neo-paganism do you ascribe do, and where in the computer industry would you like to work?"

Poly phrase: "I'm needing to do some inner work, and instead of dating
anyone would rather just work on my relationship with myself."

English translation: "I'm tired of you, but since I don't have anyone else
lined up right now I might as well get some mileage out of the personal
growth angle."

Poly phrase: "Well, I'm only theoretically poly, but I already have plenty
of firmly-held beliefs about how it could be done in real life!"

English translation: "Hi, I'm an idiot."

Poly phrase: "Swinging would be way too crass for me, I'm more about
relationships and emotional intimacy."

English translation: "I've always wanted to go to New Horizons, could
someone give me a ride there and guest me in, as long as I don't have to ask publicly?"

Poly phrase: "All of my partners are equally important to me, and they're
all primary."

English translation: "I'd rather not explicitly spell out what the hierarchy
is, but trust me - you'll know when you run into it."

Poly phrase: "Our friendship is more important than anything else."

English translation: "Once you've told me that we're done fucking, you'll
never hear a word from me again."

Poly phrase: "I'm willing to take this slow as well."
<br/&gt
